Current:       

  • Professor of Public Health and Behavioural Sciences; Director, Research & Innovation, Faculty of Health, Liverpool John Moores University (2022 to date). Operational and strategic management of the Public Health Institute (PHI), Conduct and inspire internationally recognised research, deliver a transformational and world-class educational experience, contribute international expertise to all relevant research and education programmes.

  • Consultant in Public Health (Hon), Public Health Wales, NHS Trust (2022 to date) Providing advice on International Public Health, supporting epidemiological, research and other specialist advice, linking with academic institutions, developing public health work on Adverse Childhood Experiences and violence prevention.

  • World Health Organization UK Focal Point for Violence and Injury Prevention (2007 to date). Identifying and disseminating information on the evidence base for violence and injury prevention internationally; capacity building in the fields of injury and violence prevention; leading and coordinating research of international interest on measurement and prevention of violence and injuries; advising other nations and organisations on prevention; reporting to the four UK Chief Medical Officers on developments in the fields of violence and injury.

  • Executive Director of World Health Organization Collaborating Centre on Investment for Health and Well-being), Public Health Wales (2013-2022). Leading health policy, international health and related areas of research and development. Working with Welsh and UK government on national public health policy, leading for international health including with WHO, International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI) and other international bodies Established and directed the WHO Collaborating Centre on Investment in Health and Well-being in PHW).

  • Professor of Public Health, Bangor University (2014 to date) Developing public health research, income generation, developing publications of international importance for journal publication and academic supervision of public health trainees and Ph.D. students.

  • Director, Centre for Public Health (CPH), Liverpool John Moores University (WHO Collaborating Centre for Violence Prevention) (1998-2013). Established and headed public health centre, directing public health research, development, audit and evaluation at local, regional, national and international levels; attracting new funding to the Centre typically between £3-5 million per year. Established the WHO Collaborating Centre for violence prevention. Within the role I was also Director of Research, Faculty of Health and Applied Social Sciences (1998-2013) coordinating research across the Faculty, chairing the Institute for Health Research that links health researchers across different University faculties and with key stakeholders outside the University; Director, North West Public Health Observatory (1999-2013) Developing and delivering a regional public health intelligence system; taking a national lead for public health intelligence on violence, drugs & alcohol and violence; Director, National Collaborating Centre for Drug Prevention, NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, 2004-08). Undertaking systematic evidence reviews; providing national guidance on drug prevention to individuals ranging from front line workers to Ministers; developing guidance on translating evidence into practice.

  • Director of Public Health, Birkenhead & Wallasey and Bebington & West Wirral Primary Care Trusts (2002-03). Providing strategic direction and management of Public Health across a population of over 250,000 people, member of the Board and Executive with shared responsibility for a health budget of over £240 million/year. As their first Public Health Director, established then directly managed the public health team and led input into regeneration strategy, transport, social services, community safety and environment. Acted as the PCT’s Children’s Champion.

  • Director of Sexual Health and Environmental Epidemiology Unit, Department of Public Health, University of Liverpool (1996-98). Directing research, health service support and liaison and financial aspects of the unit; developing epidemiological research and monitoring systems in HIV and drug misuse, environmental issues, health protection and promotion; and developing the University’s postgraduate degree program in Public Health.

  • Principal Scientist for Communicable Disease & Substance Use (Surveillance and Research, North West Region) Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre, Liverpool (1993-96). Responsibilities included: monitoring systems development; outbreak investigation; and epidemiological research and development in AIDS/HIV, drug misuse, health risk behaviour and communicable disease. Management of nine research and clerical-staff.

  • Research Council funded Postdoctoral Research Associate/Assistant, University of Manchester (1990-93). Research topics: human sexual behaviour, epidemiology, fertility regulation and in-vitro fertilisation.
